Parish Pilgrimage 2026 – A Day of Sunshine, Community and Quiet Grace

St Andrew’s Parish Pilgrimage on 9th May was a joyful and quietly profound day, as around thirty pilgrims set out to walk the six mile route through each community in the Parish, accompanied at each stopping point by the talented members of Swindon Brass Band. With warm sunshine, light breezes and good company, the whole event unfolded smoothly from start to finish.

We began at St Andrew’s Church at 10am, gathering with a mix of chatter and anticipation. Revd Sally led us in hymns and prayer; the perfect start to the day.  
Most pilgrims completed the full route, while others joined at the checkpoints — each one clearly marked so “we can be sure we don’t lose anyone”. The steady rhythm of walking gave space for conversation, reflection and the simple pleasure of being together in our communities.

A particularly memorable moment came at Ridgeway Rise Care Home, our first major stopping point, where we were welcomed into the garden for hymns and prayer. Residents joined us in singing as Swindon Brass Band played, creating a beautiful sense of shared worship across generations. Their voices and smiles helped send us on our way uplifted and full of renewed vigour — a highlight many pilgrims will remember for a long time.

From Ridgeway Rise we continued through Abbey Farm to Diamond Jubilee Park, and then on to Tadpole Garden Village, where we paused for lunch at the Strawberry Thief — picnics for some, pub lunches for others, all enjoyed in the sunshine.

The final stretch took us south through Oakhurst and across Thamesdown Drive before arriving at Mouldon Hill Country Park. There we gathered for a short outdoor service, giving thanks for the communities we had prayed for along the way.

And then came the perfect ending: Franco’s ice cream van arrived to greet tired but cheerful pilgrims with a well earned treat.

It was a day full of joy, but also one that held a profound sense of purpose — a chance to pray for the communities of our parish while standing in the midst of them. A reminder that pilgrimage is as much about the people and prayers shared as the miles walked.
